<description>Encyclopedia Destructica is a community-based artist book publisher based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Encyclopedia Destructica publishes hand-bound artist books and zines. Additionally, Encyclopedia Destructica produces and hosts cultural events including readings, binding parties, screenings and book releases. We are inspired by the need to explore, create and distribute contemporary art and culture in an accessible way that encourages community participation and involvement.

Encyclopedia Destructica's art-zine production is inspired from the need to explore and export contemporary arts/culture in a way that’s accessible and easy to engage in. It provides a forum for a primordial dialogue between artists and their artwork. Produced with a zine attitude and an artist book aesthetic, these hand-bound issues, unique in construction, are distributed carrying precious inspiration but not the weight of a precious art object.

We are interested in community and dialogue throughout the creative process: with the artists and editors in the process of creating an issue; the artwork within the pages of an issue; artists and participants as they work on production in binding sessions; and the viewer engaging the issue and the artwork within. To produce each issue, we hold “binding parties”, gatherings where artists, friends, &#38; the interested general public come to the Destructica studio and work on the production of the zines. Created and distributed in a DIY fashion, Encyclopedia Destructica promotes this attitude as well as providing support and resources for local artists to create their own book/zine projects.

Encyclopedia Destructica is organized into Volumes that contain 4 Issues with the possibility of addenda. Volume Atum, the first ever, was completed in 2006 and the second volume, Volume Bumba was completed in 2007. We are currently working on Volume Coatlicue. Each volume is named after a creation god from various mythologies.

Teresa Foley and Allen Hahn, were both selected to participate in the pilot installment of a unique 3-month artist residency opportunity in Pittsburgh, PA beginning in April 2009. The Old and New Media Residency was created to assist artists in producing, showing, and supporting new projects by working simultaneously with other artists and a local corporation. Encyclopedia Destructica and deeplocal, a Pittsburgh technology and design studio founded by artists, designers, and technologists, are the creators and sponsors of the residency. It represents a unique collaboration between a corporation and a working artist group. Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities

A nearly 300 page, full color book and DVD containing art, writing, and film that envisions the sexualities of beings that may some day be encountered - if not in outer space than at least in our dreams! A joint publication by Encyclopedia Destructica and the The Institute of Extraterrestrial Sexuality, this project will publish the work of 69 artists, writers and filmmakers who have created an amazing range of expressions that expand our conception of the possibilities of alien life forms and the nature of sexual desire. Strange Attractors straddles the line between a speculative scientific exploration and a work of artistic imagination and creativity.

While science fiction literature and film have often touched on alien sexuality, these encounters are almost always represented as between a human and a humanoid alien. Gender is almost always portrayed as binary even when it is homosexual. Sexual encounters consist primarily of engagements between two beings. Inspired by Kepler’s (kepler.nasa.gov) voyage into deep space on a quest for earth-like planets, this project has gone beyond male and female, beyond queer, beyond any notion of gender, beyond the anthropomorphic to erotic possibilities as vastly varied as the universe itself. Discover what kinds of sentient beings, what types of sexualities, how many erogenous zones and types of erotic pleasure might exist out there in the universe!

We need your help to make this dream a reality! By supporting Strange Attractors: Investigations in Non-Humanoid Extraterrestrial Sexualities not only will you receive unique rewards, such as an amazing book/DVD like no other before it, but you will be supporting independent publishing and the distribution of imaginative and experimental, visual art, writing and film. Thanks so much for you interest!

Over the course of six monthly meetings, the Distillery Program engages participants in ongoing dialogue with one another and invited Pittsburgh art professionals. Program sessions include studio visits and peer critiques, discussion with guest curators, critics and artists, and professional development workshops. Harold Arts Residency 2008
24 hour zine

Harold Arts is a non-profit arts organization based in Chicago, IL, which seeks to revitalize and recontextualize personal artistic processes by establishing an alternative environment to traditional arts education institutions. Their annual intensive arts residency takes place on the Jeffers Tree Farm outside of Chesterhill, OH, and is devoted to fostering the collaborative and interdisciplinary endeavors of new, emerging and mid-career artists.

In the summer of 2008, Encyclopedia Destructica was invited out to the Harold Arts Residency program as visiting artists. We are shared what we do in Pittsburgh and did a 24-hour zine project with the artists in residence.
